Cyprus unemployment up by 0.5 %

CYPRUS unemployment rate for the third quarter of 2011 reached 7.6% of the labour force, recording an increase of 0.5% compared to the previous quarter, figures released today by Cyprus Statistical Service show.

On a year basis, unemployment recorded an increase of 1.8%.

According to the results of the Labour Force Survey, which is carried out in accordance with a European Union regulation, for the 3rd quarter of 2011, the number of employed persons amounted to 372,5 thousand (males 204,8 thousand and females 167,6 thousand) and the number of unemployed persons to 30,8 thousand (males 16,4 thousand and females 14,5 thousand).

The employment rate for persons aged 20-64 was 73.1% (males 80.2% and females 66.0%) recording a decrease from the previous quarter of 2011 and the corresponding quarter of 2010.

For Q3 2011, unemployment in males reached 7.4% compared to 7.2% in Q2 2011 and 5.7% in Q3 of the previous year, whereas unemployment in females was 7.9% compared to 7.0% in Q2 2011 and 5.9% in Q3 2010.

Furthermore, the unemployment rate for young persons aged 15-24 amounted to 22.3% of the labour force of the same age group recording an increase from the previous quarter of 2011 and the corresponding quarter of 2010.
